| Biography The Italian photographer Leonardo Autera was born in Pomarico in 1961 and attended High School of Matera. Early he gets interested in image and photography. At 15 he decides to leave home and start working. One year later, Autera leaves clandestinely to France where he stays for a year. However he was forced to go back to Pomarico for health reasons. Tried to get again closer to his father but quickly the old conflicts come up. He organizes his first exhibition in his birth town, and once more packs and leave to Germany. In 1981, Autera is in Dusseldorf. Participate in a photography exhibition which takes place simultaneously in Matera, Rome, Florence, Milan and Venice, his work received praise and recognition in all those cities. In 1982, he repeats the experience in several cities of France, including Paris. Also here the welcoming of his work is rather positive. In 1983, he took his exhibition to the most important German cities as Berlin, Bremen, Hamburg, Köln, Frankfurt and Düsseldorf., where he got the opportunity to meet the great photographer Helmut Newtonand started working in his studio. Newton must have transmitted him the passion for models many of which became famous due to the wisdom Leonardo’s camera. In 1984 and 1985, he made exhibitions in Switzerland and Austria. His photography portraits the strong contrast between the quiet life of his small Pomarico and the tumult of the big European cities. Due to the permanent interest of the Italian consulate he makes photography exhibitions (from 1986 to 2001) in Russia, China, Japan, USA, Spain, Canada, Belgium, South Korea, England, Norway, Sweden, Finland and, again in Germany. Presently, Autera returned to his origins and lives in the province of Lucania, still promoting his photographic themes. Leonardo Autera has a long career devoted to the photojournalism and artistic photography. He developed his activity in more than 168 countries and exhibited his works in other 50. BIOGRAFIA Il fotografo Leonardo Autera nasce a Pomarico nel 1961 e frequenta il liceo scientifico di Matera. A 15 anni, visti i rapporti difficili con il padre, decide di andare a vivere da solo e di mantenersi facendo i lavori piu disparati. A 16 anni raggiunge clandestinamente la Francia dove rimane un anno ma, ammalatosi, deve rientrare a Pomarico. Cerca invano di riallacciare i rapporti con il padre ma, subito dopo aver allestito una mostra fotografica, riparte dirigendosi verso la Germania. Nel 1981, trovandosi a Dusseldorf, tramite il consolato Italiano all’estero, ha la possibilita di partecipare a una mostra fotografica allestita contemporaneamente a Matera, Roma, Firenze, Milano e Venezia, ricevendo consensi ovunque. Nel 1982 ripete la stessa esperienza in diverse citta della Francia, compresa Parigi. Nel 1983 e presente con le sue fotografie nella rassegna tenutasi nei piu importanti centri tedeschi, da Berlino Ovest a Brema, da Amburgo a Colonia, da Francoforte fino a Dusseldorf. Gli anni 1984-1985 vedono Autera presente sia in Svizzera che in Austria e le sue fotografie puntano sul forte contrasto esistente tra la tranquilla vita della sua piccola Pomarico e quella frenetica delle convulse metropoli europee. Sempre grazie all’interessamento del consolato italiano all’estero, tra il 1986 e il 2001, viene coinvolto in mostre fotografiche in Russia, Cina, Australia, Giappone, USA, Spagna, Canada, Belgio, Corea, Gran Bretagna, Norvegia, Svezia, Finlandia e Germania. E’ proprio in quest’ ultima nazione che ha l’occasione di incontrare e frequentare il grande fotografo Helmut Newton. L’artista trasmette ad Autera la passione per la fotografia di moda, tanto che molte modelle hanno conquistato la notorieta grazie alla sapienza del suo obbiettivo. Attualmente il fotografo vive a Pomarico, tra la “sua gente”, dove continua a promuovere i temi della propria fotografia. Citazioni: Cosa sono io agli occhi della gran parte della gente?
